Black Top Team came into being as a collaborative project between the young psychology student Jens Winther (currently member of Aarhus City Council for the party Venstre), the municipality's School-, Social Services-, and Police consultant, Peter Poulsen, and the Youth Clubs Bispehaven. Black Top Team is a group consisting of young, primarily refugee and immigrant boys between the age of 13 to 18 years, who through debate and dance attempt to enter into dialogue with Danish youths. Black Top Team is made up of two teams: one team consists of the debaters, who through the principle of “youth to youth” communicate opinions, thoughts, and feelings from their own everyday life experiences as young refugees/immigrants in Denmark in addition to experiences from their countries of origin. The other team consists of the hip-hop dancers who, after many hours of hard work in the training area, perform and do workshops on the spectacular and difficult dance steps. Our objectives have been varied over the years, but we mainly visit schools, clubs, and organizations. A typical event lasts two to two and a half hours: after a brief introduction and presentation by the debate group, a debate is initiated with the audience. When the debate dies out – after an hour to one and a half hour – the hip-hop dance group takes the stage with a show that lasts 15 minutes approximately. Following the show, the audience is invited to the dance floor for a dance workshop, which usually lasts for 20 to 40 minutes.
